Driving between New York City and Boston, we knew that we wanted to stop along the way and explore a new town. While it would have been amazing to go to Cape Cod and Martha’s Vineyard, that could be an entirely different trip. So we settled on Newport, Rhode Island which is slightly out of the way, but not enough that we didn’t mind the detour. Rhode Island marks the 23rd US State that I’ve visited!

Famous for its huge mansions and known as the perfect summer getaway, Newport now contains one of the highest number of surviving colonial buildings of any city in the United States. On our visit, however, the city was just waking up from its winter slumber. It was quiet and quaint. Everything you’d think of as a New England town.

We didn’t get a chance to drive around to the various mansions due to time, but we did take a quick wander through the downtown area. With so much more to see, a return visit to quaint Newport is a must for me.

Newport, Rhode Island was infinitely cute and I loved its New England charm. I wish we had more time to spend wandering its streets and to check out some of those mansions.

How do you make the most of a short visit when you’re just passing through?

We are planning to do a bit of a New England roadtrip around Labor Day and we haven’t decided where to go in Rhode Island – this might be the place!

Definitely go and spend more than just an afternoon there! The whole drive along the coast is really beautiful. Wish I had more time.

Rhode Island is super cute and congrats on visiting all of those US States! I’ve never been though I’d love to stop by on a lengthy road trip or something! 🙂

Charming! When I pass through a place I do the same as you… just wander around an area (usually downtown) to get a feeling of the place. And regret and do not have more time to explore 🙂

Ohhh! Looks like my kind of town. As a matter of fact, it has been on my radar for some time. I would love to drive from New York to Boston.

Beautiful photos and it looks like you covered quite a bit with a short time in downtown. I have heard such great things about the mansions that I’d love to visit one day too. I think downtown areas do give you some sense into the towns especially with a tight schedule.

Love the pictures! That’s a cool sculpture as well – I wonder what the story behind it is!

I was wondering the same thing, but I couldn’t find any info on it at the time. Quick google search and there isn’t much online about it either, but I did find this. Just a random sculpture I guess!

Newport looks lovely! We have a Newport near us on the Isle of Wight in Southern England. Just recently visited the States for the first time and loved it! #CityTripping x

You must go back!! We went to Newport years ago now (eek, 20 years) but we have always wanted to return because we loved it so much. And the mansions are well worth visiting. It’s a different time, a different world, all very Great Gatsby! #Citytripping

Yes! That’s the perfect way of describing it. Great Gatsby-like 🙂

Beautiful pictures! Must visit next time we make a trip over to Boston (my brother lives there) as we’ve not explored Rhode Island. Like you, we usually have a wander around and get a feel for the place without doing TOO much…then talk lots about going back! Too many places! Thanks for linking up to #citytripping !

For sure! There are too many amazing places to see in the world. If only one had all the time to visit…
