At the beginning of summer, I put together a list of things I wanted to accomplish this summer as a way of exploring more of Vancouver and its surrounding areas. Would you believe, that I’ve lived next to a U-Pick farm for years and have never gone to pick berries? It’s crazy! But no more.
Now that I have gone this one time, I can see myself going back again. The whole experience was fun and rather therapeutic.
We’re approaching the end of strawberry season and it could be seen on the fields. Most of the bushes were empty. Typically strawberries are in season from June to July in Vancouver.
At first, we weren’t very successful. The plants were empty and what strawberries we could find were very small.
But we walked to the very back of their field and were met with success. I guess most people don’t make the trek all the way to the very back. It was worth it though!
It was a lot of fun peeking under the plants in search of the plumpest and juiciest strawberries.
We didn’t have any buckets on hand, so we used an empty plastic container and a plastic bag. Remember to bring your own! (Or you can buy them for 25 cents each at this farm.)
We ended up with 6.5 pounds of strawberries. Each pound was $1.50. They’re all so sweet and juicy – much better than anything you get at the supermarket. Time to find some delicious strawberry recipes!
Or if you don’t have time to pick them, they also have a stand with fresh berries ready to go.
This was a lot of fun and would make a great family outing. Just make sure you remember the sunscreen and a hat! In an hour or so, we had more than enough berries to enjoy.
Up next is blueberry and blackberry season so you know what I’ll be doing in a couple weeks!
Birak Berry Farm
3600 Number 6 Road
Richmond, BC.
Hours Daily: 8:00AM – 9:00PM
That looks like a fun way to experience a farm and get some freebie samples while you pick…looks like you picked the best ones in the back areas allright!
Definitely! So delicious 🙂
I’d enjoy this. I used to go blackberry picking every year when I was growing up. I’d see them every time I closed my eyes for weeks after!
Yum! Blackberries! Our season is approaching soon, so hopefully I’ll be able to grab some of these too. I know what you mean. I’ve been dreaming of all those strawberries we picked!
We did see lots of these farms in Vancouver in 2010. Fresh strawberry jam is beautiful. And maybe some scones and cream to go with it 🙂
Strawberries any way you have them are delicious. Such a versatile fruit. The hardest part is deciding which! 😉
so sad i missed strawberry season!
Come up north! We’re still going strong – at least for a few more weeks. =)
Oh, this is something I haven’t done either! Have done apple picking though. Thanks for the tip about going all the way to the back to find the plump berries.
You definitely should! It’s so much fun and easy to do once you get started. Apple picking sounds fun. I love apples.
We have blueberry bushes in our yard so I pick tons of them. Believe it or not, I have never picked strawberries!
YUM! I love blueberries. I wish I had bushes in my yard! I wouldn’t be able to stop eating them all.
